The False Step - Don't Let Yesterdays Failure Lead To Tomorrows - Learn How To Get On Google Maps
Now whatever type of advertising you do to get new customers, there is without a doubt one technique that is just the least beneficial. That's advertising that never gets seen.
Computer systems became an essential productivity tool in the 1980's long before the "Internet" or "World Wide Web" manifested itself during the late 1990's. The web started out with a flourish that gradually blew up as the dot com bubble. Now not everything was awful about that experience. But essentially the most common results for thousands of small businesses was a flock of internet websites that virtually no one ever saw. (Besides maybe your mom and you when you took the time to try to find it.)
I've referred to these types of small business websites as electronic brochures as useful as a "billboard in a pasture that only the cows see." As of 2010, approximately fifty percent of all small businesses in the USA had websites for their own businesses, and the other 50% steadfastly refused to take the plunge. It's sad for me personally to say so, but in many areas the guys who choose not to play the internet game may have won on their bet.
Whether they paid big bucks to a pricey web designer, or got by on the cheap by using the services of the son or nephew the problem was the same. It was one thing to have an online site and another one altogether to have one that was basically worth beans from a marketing and advertising perspective.
Now there were a lot of things wrong about most of these internet websites that goes well beyond the purposes of this specific report. I detailed most of them in an eBook I wrote many years ago called, "Why Most Small Business Web Sites Stink!" But the actual salient point for our discussion today is that these internet websites in general were difficult to find by customers looking for a provider to meet their requirements. Therefore, they were generally useless, from a purely marketing viewpoint.
Now if your prospective customer already knew your business name, or the URL of your internet site, they could find you. They could maybe check your hours, phone number or address, which was not all bad. But if they were actually looking to buy a left handed pipe wrench that you actually sold, the odds were not good. The net result is that almost all businesses did not draw in a lot of new customers because of their internet site. They needed to drive website traffic to their webpages by other forms of advertising before they can potentially provide any real help.
I mention all of this because, Times Have Changed. Sadly, many local businesses having been once burned and/or disheartened about the importance of the internet are now slow to pick up on the new facts. The new reality is that small business people need to learn how to get on Google maps.
