A Physical Education And Health Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Critical Nature Of Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the largest co-ed high school in the district. Although she had been teaching for only five years, she had already obtained a reputation as a person with a teaching approach that stimulated and encouraged her students to think and to learn.
As an illustration, one Friday morning at 9:30 she addressed the pupils in her class and stated the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more broad-based standpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a more detailed standpoint."
"Not every one of these alcoholism warning signs will unquestionably confirm that an individual with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a person manifests, the stronger the probability that he or she is an alcohol dependent individual."
Miss Jackson then informed the class members that each individual would be held responsible for researching two alcohol addiction signs and then presenting his or her findings to the class by way of a twenty-five minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the pupils in her class to study the list and rank the top five alcohol dependency signs that were most indicative of alcohol dependency. After roughly fifteen minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told her students that after she assesses the results, she will present her findings the morning of the next school day.
Miss Jackson asked her pupils to go over the information on the sheet of paper she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within a minute or two, virtually everyone in the class raised her or his hand. It was noticeable that the students had some concerns, issues, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For instance, almost every person in the classroom disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, to be exact, "Do you feel really sick when you abstain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed her students why this answer was the most clear-cut indicator of alcoholism. She pointed out that the foremost difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcohol addiction and not with alcohol abuse.
For all intents and purposes this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol suddenly stops drinking, he or she will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the relevance of alcohol withdrawals in the life of the individual who is alcohol dependent, the pupils started to recognize the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signaling the end of class. Based on the enthusiasm exhibited by the pupils when they were leaving the room, Miss Jackson realized that she had stimulated and encouraged the students in her classroom to stop and think about an important health issue and social problem that exists in our society.
