A Lingering Acne Scar May Be The Legacy Of Manual Blemish Removal

While acne is a major source of discouragement, a poorly handled manual treatment of an acne breakout can inadvertently result in an acne scar that may be very difficult to remove. Normally, an acne scar is the result of a person's attempt to clear out a blemish manually. By squeezing or popping a zit, a hole can be left in the skin that is slow to heal correctly. Acne scar-forming wounds also leave the possibility open for additional infections caused by bacteria invading this broken place on the skin.

Acne typically begins forming with an excess of sebum from sebaceous glands underneath the skin. This protective but oily element makes its way to the skin's surface and out through the pores to help lubricate the skin. However, it sometimes mixes with flakes of dead skin and bacteria, clogging the pores. This then forms blackheads and pimples in most people, but may give rise to cysts below the skin in severe cases. Manual manipulation of these clogged pores can culminate in the dispersal of the bacteria and the potential to leave an acne scar.

In some cases, what may appear to be an acne scar is not in reality a true scar; rather, it may be a red spot where the acne lesion has run its course. These small red spots, also called macules, may appear almost the same as a scar but, unlike an acne scar, they will disappear completely within about five to six months.

In more persistent cases, after an acne lesion has healed, there may be some discoloration in the skin's pigment, but this may also be mistaken for an acne scar. These marks will typically disappear in about 12 to 18 months, growing lighter with time, and are not truly scars.
